Post Spay-Neuter Surgery Care

Food & Water:

Give 1/3 to 1/2 animal's normal meal the day after surgery. Some queasiness can be expected for a 24-hour period after anesthesia.

Exercise and Activity:

Dogs: Leash walking is OK, but no strenuous activity, such as jumping, for 5-7 days.

Cats: Use shredded paper or pellet litter (such as Yesterday's News) for 2-3 days.

Keep the animal indoors for at least 3 days. The animal may have a bath after 10 days.

Sutures:

Usually absorbable and bured - none need to be removed. Check with your vet.

Incision:

Monitor incision site for any redness, swelling or discharge. Do not allow pet to lick or chew at the incision site and do not apply anything to the incision without contacting a veterinarian. If animal insists on licking the incision, purchase an Elizabethan collar from a pet store or veterinarian to prohibit this behavior until the incision heals.

**Check with your veterinarian upon picking up your animal for any special instructions.
