What happens on Spay Day in Sacramento?
Every
year on the last Sunday in February, hundreds of Sacramento
area volunteers join
together to spay
and neuter up to 1,000 dogs and cats. These
surgeries are offered for a small payment to the
area's neediest families.
For several years running,
it has been the largest one-day
spay/neuter
event in the country! Read
about our successful 2008 event.

What
is so special about Spay Day in Sacramento?
Sacramento is home
to the largest one-day spay/neuter event in America!
Since 2000, we have spayed and neutered more than 5,000
pets, helping to reduce the number of homeless and
unwanted animals in the Sacramento area.
Why
is SPAY DAY a much-needed event?
- Of
the roughly 40,000
animals that enter Sacramento's three shelters
every year, 50 percent
are euthanized.
- Despite
these efforts, we are killing too many animals,
creating stress on the shelters and a huge
burden for tired rescuers. The answer is to dramatically
increase spay and neuter efforts. Two percent of
the area's animals can produce ALL the wanted puppies
and kittens Sacramento families desire.
How
do I get a Spay Day appointment?
We
open our appointment phone line in January. Appointments
are made on a first-come, first-served basis! Check
back after January 1 for more information.
What
if I don't get an appointment on Spay Day?
SPAY DAY USA is ONLY PART of
a series of significant and dramatic efforts aimed
at turning the tide on
pet over-population. SAAC is increasing the
funding of spay-neuter programs in the short run so
that the
long run costs of operating the shelter (both
fiscal and moral) will drop dramatically.
