Sometimes
people find themselves in the unfortunate position of
no longer being able to keep their pet. While we hope
they seek to try as many different options as possible
before deciding to place their pet in another family,
we want to provide these "do it yourself"
alternatives to taking your pet to the local animal
shelter.
ONLINE:
Several websites allow you to post
your animals for free:
Other
websites offer advice for how to place animals
in the right home:
-
PETA
has a
brochure on placing your pet in a good home.
-
"How
to Find Homes for Homeless Pets" is
available from Best Friends Animal Society.
*You will need Adobe Acrobat
Reader to open and print these files. If you do
not have this software, it is available for free
downloading by clicking on the image below.

CHECK WITH BREED RESCUE GROUPS:
Check out our Rescue
Links section to contact a particular breed rescue
group if your animal is a purebred or even a mixed
breed dog that has an identifiable breed. Many of
these groups have people looking for specific breeds.
ATTEND AN OFF-SITE ADOPTION EVENT:
A number of organziations offer regular (weekly
or monthly) adoption events, where potential adopters
can connect with animals in need of homes. Visit
our adoption
events page for more
details on area events.
ADVERTISE
IN THE PAPER:
You can run an ad in Valley Community Newspapers
for about $15, or an ad in the Sacramento
Bee. *Remember to charge a fee of $50 or more...
no "free to good home" ads if you care about
your pet!
POST
FLYERS:
Make flyer with a photo and important information about
your pet. Give your friends, neighbors, and family
copies
to post at their work. Post at coffee shops but not
if they ask you to post in the back by the bathrooms
(it's a waste of time and money). Post at vet's offices,
dog park bulletin boards, anywhere they let you! Also,
try www.apartments.com
click on "pets allowed" or www.dogfriendly.com.
MAKE
A RESUME:
You might even produce a resume for your dog highlighting
stuff like: "not destructive," "housebroken,"
"friendly," "obedience training completed
through ______ training program." Offer to have
the dog temperment tested by a qualified trainer if
it helps. Good luck!
